Primrose Valley Staycation

Not my normal October half-term holiday break, however a staycation it was this year due to the current situation. PRIMROSE VALLEY We settled on an extended family break to Yorkshire.  It suited us to stay at Primrose Valley Holiday Park through Haven Holidays in Filey.  I have been to a few of their parks when my daughter was younger and the last time, I stayed here was approximately 20 years ago.  Fair to say it has changed quite a bit.  Primrose Valley is still one of their biggest holiday parks. Upon booking we were given instructions on how to book activities during our stay and entertainment.  At present, Haven are only booking hideaway breaks with no entertainment passes included.  These can be added in future, depending on local lock-down rules.  Luckily, we were able to add them on and visited the entertainment every night.  If you wanted to eat on-site, you also must book this in advance. We were met upon arrival at the park and given a pack with information in it.  We had booked our swim slots for Thursday morning and went to the adventure pool.  WOW!  Great changing facilities, plenty of space for swimming, some bubble pools, slides and children’s activity/splash pool.  There are also plenty of activities you can book in advance for the pool which we have done before. There are plenty activities to keep your little ones busy if you wish – e.g. Aerial adventure course, climbing wall, kayaking, pedalos, crazy golf and even a funfair. The park is also on the beach, which is great for families or if you are taking the dog with you. We didn’t eat on-site, but there were 2 lovely restaurants to choose from. We stayed in the deluxe newer 3 bedroomed mobile home.  It was lovely, had heating in every room, 2 toilets, shower, good sized kitchen and living area.  The location was handy for the entertainment and was very clean.  No need to worry about Coronavirus as it had been fully sanitised. OUT N’ABOUT Primrose Valley is in an excellent location which made it easy to get out and about.  On our drive down from Scotland, we stopped at York.  WOW!!  What a beautiful city.  I can’t believe it has taken me this long to go.  So many beautiful streets, local shops, quaint restaurants and cafes, especially around the Shambles and Minster areas.  Lots of local history if you wanted to visit York Minster Cathedral, York museum and castle, Van Gogh museum or the Transport Museum to name but a few. GO APE – We booked for Go Ape at Dalby Forest for 7 of us.  My 2nd time at Go Ape and it didn’t let us down.  Nothing better than zipping through the forest.  Fantastic value for money taking approximately 2 hours to get around the course.  Approximately 50 minutes’ drive from Filey. FILEY town centre is only a short drive away.  Beach and promenade looked beautiful and again had a lovely town centre.  Even had a big Tesco supermarket for anything you need or there is a supermarket on-site which wasn’t expensive. FLAMINGOLAND – We went to Flamingoland on Wednesday for the full day – 10 am till 5 pm.  Most of the rides were open which was great.  Lots of choice for different ages and the queues weren’t long which was great.  My favourite ride was Velocity – Accelerating from 0-60mph in just 2.8 seconds and hurtling through over 2000ft of hairpin turns, dramatic inclines and spine-tingling falls.     THE COAST – SCARBOROUGH, ROBIN HOOD’S BAY AND WHITBY – We travelled to some coastal villages en-route home. Scarborough has 2 bays with sandy beaches are split by a headland bearing the 12th-century Scarborough Castle. We parked in the new town area and walked downhill but took the Victorian Central Tramway funicular train back which links the town centre with South Bay and its harbour. Scarborough also has a SEA LIFE Sanctuary and Peasholm Park Japanese gardens.  Scarborough is smaller than the likes of Blackpool, but you’ll still find fun at the fair at the amusement arcades and such like. Robin Hood’s Bay was my favourite.  It is such a picturesque old fishing village on the Heritage Coast of the North York Moors. It is a fantastic place with child and dog-friendly sandy beach, as well as rock pools to explore and ancient fossils to discover.  I loved Wandering through its narrow, twisting cobbled streets and alleyways, you can easily imagine the sailors and fishermen, smugglers and press gangs that walked these streets hundreds of years ago. Today it is a vibrant village, with a wide range of café’s, pubs, restaurants and shops as well as many stunning coastal and country walks, cycle paths and bridleways right on the doorstep.  You can also cycle to Cumbria or Filey and travel along the lovely coastal walks. Whitby– Not too far from Robin Hood’s Bay.  Another seaside town split by the River Esk. On the East Cliff, overlooking the North Sea, the ruined Gothic Whitby Abbey was Bram Stoker’s inspiration for “Dracula”. Nearby is the Church of St. Mary, reached by 199 steps. We visited The Captain Cook Memorial Museum, in the house where Cook once lived.  You can find displays paintings and maps. West of town is West Cliff Beach, lined with beach huts.  I wouldn’t’ hesitate to explore more of Yorkshire in future.  A beautiful part of England.

Travel Update, where can I travel to?

It has been an eventful fortnight for our industry with the announcement of travel beginning to restart. We’re pleased to welcome the official easing of quarantine for a number of key destinations which should go some way to supporting our late summer market. From the list of countries published last Friday, which can be found by clicking here, only 25 countries are deemed safe to travel by the FCO and also don’t impose a mandatory quarantine for 14 days upon the arrival. Please note that for Scotland, this list does not include Spain. You can find full details of the Scottish Government’s decision on quarantine destinations by clicking here. We will continue to lobby for this decision to be reversed. With so much confusion and information right now, it is essential that your customers receive the correct and most up to date information with regards to each individual country’s entry requirements. https://reopen.europa.eu/en is a very useful tool and it is being updated daily. Once you choose which country you need, please check the Health and Safety section, to get answers to the following questions: May I enter this country without being subject to a mandatory quarantine?  May I enter this country without a medical certificate, such as  a negative test  Are there any risk areas under lockdown in this country?  Is the physical distancing required? What are the health protocols for tourism services and tourists?

The Great Family Holiday!

Ah, the great family holiday! How times have changed.  I remember growing up, with family holidays being mainly in the UK – places like Rhyl in Wales or Nairn, North of Scotland.  My 1st holiday abroad was at Salou, mainland Spain, when I was 13 years old.  Certainly, never forgotten.  It was amazing! That was when I decided I wanted to work within the Travel Industry. The family holiday has evolved so much, with families looking for so much more these days. (Although, I’m sure the embarrassing Dad dancing still exists)! Families tend to be more adventurous, with words like ‘education’ and ‘conservation’ becoming more key to the experience.  The bucket and spade break might not be as universally popular, but ABTA’s research shows that Spain, Greece and France are still family favourites.  Turkey is a growing market with lots of hotels having an astronomical amount to do on-site. It is also well researched that creating childhood memories are better than toys. Families are looking to create experiences, whether that is the thrills and spills of a Theme Park or learning to sail, a skiing holiday or trying water sports. All-inclusive holidays are still extremely popular with families, as your meals and drinks are included in the up-front cost (not forgetting ice-cream in most).  Most accommodations have children’s clubs, entertainment by day and night for the family and some even have waterparks or water sports on the beach.  The likes of Mark Warner holidays and Club Med have resorts across the world catering for families looking for activities on dry land or water.                                                         For some, however, they prefer spending time as a large family or group of friends and hiring a villa with private pool and car hire.  Exploring their local area, eating out and getting to know the local way of life. Some adults want to go on a holiday of a lifetime, at times making it part of a children’s Christmas. Taking the kids to see Santa in Lapland, visiting Mickey Mouse in Disneyworld, seeing Elephants on an African Safari, snorkelling in the Caribbean or holding a Koala Bear in Australia.                                      The cruise market is huge now, with some ships having waterslides, dodgem cars, ice rinks, racing car circuits, rollercoasters and Broadway shows.  Be prepared to pack loose-fitting trousers as you taste the amazing gastronomy options.  Imagine waking up in a different port every day!                                                                                      My customers love to take @brilliantbear with them on their travels too! If the children are happy, the adults are too! Julie Batchelor Brilliant Travel

Review of the New Celebrity Edge Ship

Redefining Modern Luxury I was fortunate enough to join Celebrity Cruises new ship – Celebrity Edge at Southampton with more than 900 other Trade Partners.  I got to experience her innovative features first-hand.  Many new features include suites with open-air plunge pools and 270-degree views, an outdoor Rooftop Garden, a ‘Magic Carpet’ dining area suspended from the side of the ship and the three-deck dining and entertainment space, ‘Eden’. This ship is so unlike many other cruise ships and cutting-edge for Celebrity. Edge class is setting a new standard of luxury.       WOW FACTOR DINING The 4 main restaurants are all complimentary and the overall dining experience is quite exceptional. You can eat somewhere different every night, with a very different atmosphere and menu choice in each.  We ate at the Cosmopolitan restaurant for 1 breakfast, lunch and dinner. We also ate lunch at the buffet restaurant and the Normandie for dinner 1 night.  All meals were of a 1st class standard with very friendly and helpful staff throughout.  There is an option to pay at various other restaurants which average $55.                                       27% BIGGER STATEROOMS AND OUTWARD FACING DESIGN I stayed in the infinite balcony stateroom décor was perfect being both modern and on trend – thanks to award-winning designer, Kelly Hoppen’s collaboration with Celebrity. Don’t forget to download the App which allows you to control the lights, temperature, TV and much more besides – all from your phone. We viewed all the other cabins and suites.  What really amazed us, was the space, no matter whether you stay in an inside cabin or a suite.  The suites were out of this world. It really is different! Everything is designed to make the destination the focus of attention. What really amazed us was how it feels a lot more spacious inside, with more floor-to-ceiling windows than on other ships, making the ceilings feel higher. Whether you stay in an inside cabin or a suite.  Some suites even have a plunge pool or jacuzzi. THE GREAT OUTDOORS It’s a ship that invites you to enjoy the outdoors at sea as never before. You can chill on the Rooftop Garden, a place to chill, with the vibe changing throughout the day. My favourite cocktail was the Mango Daquiri in the afternoon, listening to live music and ocean views from the pool area and the martini glass hot tub. The beautiful butterfly statue next to the pool is probably the most photographed area around the ship.                          A PARADISE CALLED EDEN Glass-encased Eden must be the most inspiring and imaginative venue on the oceans today – a bright and airy space where Chillful mornings, Playful afternoons and Sinful evenings are all on the menu. Here you’ll find a bar next to a Living Wall of plants, a stylish café for leisurely breakfast bites, and a speciality restaurant designed to thrill all your senses. And that’s just a taste. FLYING THE MAGIC CARPET I couldn’t believe how spacious the Magic Carpet was in real life. This engineering marvel changes station up the ship’s side, becoming a new venue at each deck it stops at.  It also acts as a bar and a casual seafood restaurant alongside Raw on 5.  When on deck 2 it is a brand-new way to embark/disembark.  MIND-BLOWING ENTERTAINMENT I had the chance to enjoy world-class shows – With amazing singers, dancers and acting at the Theatre.  The stage area was amazing, immersing you in the entertainment like never before.  With 4 stages and 3 moving backdrops.  I also had a great laugh listening to a comedian 1 night and a 1920’s show with Aerialists in ‘The Club.’  We really enjoyed the atmosphere in the evening around the Grand Plaza, spanning over 3 floors with entertainment, centred around the Champagne Bar with live music.  The vibe around this area, I felt was the main hub of the evening from approximately 5 pm. THE RETREAT The retreat is an area exclusive to suite guests which is quieter, relaxing and had great views.  It offered further luxury, with deluxe sunbeds, small pool, private bar and access to the Luminae restaurant. CAMP AT SEA Although there weren’t really any children on-board, I managed to have a look around the kid’s club areas.  From babies to teenagers, they have activities to suit. SPA/ACTIVITIES If you are spending the day at sea, there are plenty of activities to keep you entertained.  You can enjoy the latest in Spa innovation or the adults-only indoor solarium, which was very spacious, with loads of sunbeds.  Aquaclass guests and up can enjoy the spa area free of charge.  There are lots of activities to take part in around the ship.  We even took part in a laser quest. IN SUMMARY I have the most amazing 2 days trip, I would recommend this to anyone looking for a luxury cruise, with innovative features, contemporary feel.  I feel it attracts an under 60-year-old market or the young at heart.  So, if this is something you think you would like to holiday on, please get in touch. Czech out Julie’s travels to Prague with #BrilliantBear

Steeped in history, brimming with charm lies the popular city of Prague.  With beautiful cobbled streets, bridges, cathedrals and castles.  And, I couldn’t have had better weather to enjoy it.  We had lovely sunny Winter’s few days.  I travelled with my partner for 2 nights travelling from Edinburgh with EasyJet.  Flights were great and on time with an early morning start. Transferring into the city centre from Prague airport is very easy and cheap with a great bus/rail link with a 90-minute ticket costing approximately £1.20.  They have great transportation also around the city with a frequent tram service covering all tourist areas.  You can also purchase 1 day to 3-day travel tickets.  However, it is also very easy to walk around the city, which we did.   ACCOMMODATION We stayed in a central location – 5* Jalta Boutique hotel, on Wenceslas Square.  Our room was cosy and had everything we needed, especially a comfortable bed.  Unfortunately, there was some building work behind the hotel, however, didn’t bother us.  Plenty of choices at breakfast of hot and cold dishes.  There is a Fallout shelter and cold war museum situated under the hotel from the 1950s with guided tours available.  I couldn’t fault customer service throughout.     OUT N’ABOUT With so much to cramp in, we decided to head out for some sightseeing.  We made our way toward the old town square.  1st stop some lunch, but just ate on the go as so much to see.   Astronomical Clock – Constructed in 1410.  Very impressive. Every hour, on the hour you can watch to see the small wooden figures move. Just a few steps away is St. Nicholas Church, the pretty green and white building has a gorgeous chandelier and marble interior. There are also a few street entertainers in the square, fascinating to watch and couldn’t help but get a picture with #Brilliantbear – (Brilliant Travel’s bear that travels the globe with myself and Customers).   PITSTOP We decided to stop in at the famous ‘Black angels Bar’ just off the old town square for a few cocktails.  This place is a hidden gem in the basement of the ‘U Price hotel’.  Designed in the 1930’s style.  Their cocktails are one of a kind.  I couldn’t decide what one to have, so our mixologist – Frederik made one up for me.  Was the best cocktail I’ve had.  Would be rude to just have 1, so stayed for a few. We found a lovely traditional basement restaurant in the Old town square for dinner and opted for some local cuisine, which was lovely – Beef Goulash.  We also enjoyed some local live music. Back to the hotel for some rest, ready for another day.   2nd DAY OF SIGHTSEEING Up early our 1st stop was the Gallery of Steel Figures which my partner really fancied.  It is prepared with almost 100 handmade exhibits, where you can find sculptures made of recycled metal in the Art Noveau Building just off Wenceslas Square, from cars to movie characters.  It was just amazing and a great way to spend an hour.   We then headed off towards the castle, walking through some meandering cobbled streets.  Decided to do some tourist shopping near the Charles Bridge.  The bridge itself has an amazing history and one of the most visited bridges in all the world.  With street entertainers and the most awesome views of Prague Castle.     Prague Castle The largest castle complex in the world, a must do for any tourist going to Prague.  There are many steps to climb, but well worth it for the view alone.  There are a few ticket options for different areas of the castle you can access.  You can easily spend a few hours.  I would recommend seeing St. Vitus Cathedral, the Golden Lane, St. Wenceslas Chapel and the Basilica of St. George.  You can also have a guided tour for a few Krona more.      We couldn’t go all this way and not visit the John Lennon Wall and sign our names on the wall.  People have filled the wall with art, names and Beatles song lyrics.  In 1988, the wall was used by the Czechs to display their anger against communism.  Today it is a symbol or love and peace.   A WELL-DESERVED TREAT Well, after walking our socks off, it would have been rude for us not to have the famous Trdeinik.  Dough that is wrapped around a stick then grilled on an open flame and sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon.  They are cheap and delicious.  I had ours filled with ice-cream, chocolate brownies and chocolate sauce.  I daren’t count the calories!!   DINNER & DRINKS As the sun was still shining, we enjoyed a well-earned rest at the White Horse by enjoying a little refreshment at its Al-Fresco dining area with lovely views of the square.   We enjoyed dinner later that evening at the U Prince Hotel for some more Al-Fresco dining just of the Old Town Square.  Their menu had great choices and found it quite reasonable with a great atmosphere.   One last place on our list and that was Hard Rock Café.  One of the largest in Europe, 3 floors high.  Great atmosphere and great music. Back to the hotel for an early rise back home after an amazing few days. Prague – you stole my heart!  Till next time…
